What is a Delegate?

Delegates are individuals who represent their state or community at their party’s presidential nominating convention. These delegates choose a presidential candidate to represent the national party in the November general election. They also approve the party’s platform and adopt rules governing the party. Much like in the general election, where a candidate needs a majority of votes in the Electoral College to win the White House, primary candidates need a majority of delegate votes at the convention to win the party’s presidential nomination. The candidate who accumulates a majority of delegates is the one who ultimately advances to the general election.
